Celebration of International Day of Forests 2019

Mangrove Restoration Programme – 21st March 2019

Sri Lanka has pledged itself to restore mangrove ecosystems and H.E the President Maithripala Sirisena officially announced the readiness to Champion the Commonwealth Blue Charter Action Group for Mangrove Restoration during the Commonwealth Heads of States meeting of 2018 held in London. 

Through this initiative, Sri Lanka intends to lead a group of Commonwealth countries on protection and restoration of Mangrove cover, across the commonwealth. As the champion in Mangrove restoration, Sri Lanka has to demonstrate successful practices in science-based restoration of mangroves while generating benefits to local community. In order to fulfill these requirements, several initiatives have been taken by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Accordingly, Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment in collaboration with the District forest office, Puttalam was conducted the mangrove restoration programme at Kandakuliya and Paniadiya coastal area in Kalpitiya District in parallel to the celebration of International Day of Forests 2019. 1000 plants were provided by the Kakapalliya regional office of the Coast Conservation Department and Small Fisheries Federation. District Secretariat Office- Puttalam, Coast Conservation Department, Divisional Secretariat Office -Kalipitiya, Pradeshiya Saba - Kalipitiya, Sri Lanka Navy, group from Kite Lanka Resort, Small Fisheries Federation and community were supported to plant 1000 Mangrove plants.
