Amongst the different ecosystems in Sri Lanka, mangroves represent a unique collection of specialized fauna and flora adopted to survive in brackish water conditions and intertidal zones. As per the estimates of Department of Forests (2010), 15,669 ha of Sri Lanka is covered with mangroves. In Sri Lanka, around 21 true mangrove and several mangrove associated flora have been identified. Most importantly, this represents one third of the world mangrove species diversity.

The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015 and celebrated each year on 26 July, aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem" and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.

25% of the terrestrial biodiversity in the world and 50% biodiversity hotspots are represented by the mountain.  15% of the world population live in the mountain areas. Endemic species are very high as well as species diversity & habitat diversity are very high in mountains. Various communities, cultures and environmental knowledge can be found.
